I love Tuesdays because I get to work with my small group of 5th and 6th graders. I was in for a shock today, after talking with a few girls who are in the 4th grade class. Trying to make conversation, I asked if they went to school today. I was planning on following the question up with asking, "what did you learn," but we didn't make it that far. I learned that many of the kids we work with do not go to school. Maybe they have attended a few years of school, but they are not enrolled anymore due to the cost of transportation, or price of books. When we transitioned from the large group to to my small group, I asked my kids if they went to school, and only a few said yes. The rest didn't respond. I had one new student today, who has a home, but works the streets for a living and does not go to school. While the rest of the group was working on practicing the times tables, I worked with Francisco on learning the "ones" times tables. I encouraged him to keep coming and learning. Hopefully I will continue to be able to work with him.
