Oh these parents!

I really have to change my mentality to be able to work with the parents. Because the parents pay for their children's education, they can make demands that the school has to meet. Sometimes I feel like I work in customer service instead of a school! In the States because education is free and public, you get what you get! Today in the open house the parents started to give suggestions of things I should do as a teacher. I'm just not used to that!! After 3 parents suggested things like not giving homework, changing the days I give quizzes, and the way my desks are arranged, a mom stepped in to defend me. "Miss McNerney was my daughter's teacher 2 years ago when she was in 5th grade. Believe me when I tell you she knows what she's doing!". She went on for 5 minutes going on and on about what a great teacher I am. I felt like a grew a foot taller a foot taller as she spoke! I don't know what if I would have done if she wouldn't have stepped to defend me. At the end of the open house she came up to me and whispered, "The parents sure are difficult, aren't they? They're tougher than a class full of kids!" Boy isn't that the truth!!
